Pick-A-Movie to Watch Tonight!!

Last night, I had planned to watch a movie as it had been a long time I had done so. It has been almost 5 months that I have watched a movie with complete satisfaction, all thanks to Chennai.  The reason is that I like to watch movies only at home, sitting cosily in my chair. I just cannot concentrate with people moving around, in a hostel like atmosphere. Another reason for not watching movies, which is probably the most important one, is the Internet connection at Chennai. A simple Google search takes about 50 seconds. Miss Beam fibre :(

Okay, now coming back to watching a movie, I have almost 600 plus unwatched movies on my hard disk. I had been through this in the past, its very hard to zero-in on a movie, just by looking at its name. Obviously the best way out, is to resort to IMDB ratings. Although Google is intelligent enough to give the movie's rating with just the name, it gets messy when we have to decide the best among a collection of 20 movies. Searching for 20 titles, opening multiple tabs, comparing the ratings and by the time you decide, about 30-40 minutes of precious leisure time is gone. Even if you are a movie freak, who watches a movie everyday, you would find this boring to do.

Well, at this juncture, a thought struck me. I decided I shall skip watching a movie tonight, so that the next time I don't have to go through this process again. I started to code furiously, ideas jumping from my left brain to the right. It was 2:30 AM when I started and I successfully completed it by 8:30 AM. That shows how amateur my coding skills are :D. I don't know why I did not resort to Google this time around. Probably because I am contemplating a lot about how useless I have become these days. This blog, the posts and the coding fury, all  are the outcome of my frustration. Happy to see that it is constructive.

My friends know that I always keep talking a lot about what little I have done. Enough of self-dabba now.

Go ahead guys and girls, who have a lot of movies on your hard disk, who are facing the predicament of finding the right movie to watch.

How To:
1) Click Select Movie Folder and browse to the folder containing movies.
2) Once you have chosen the directory click Rate Movies!
3) Wait until the progress bar fills up
4) The app will open a browser window with ratings.
5) The app creates an html file with movie ratings in the selected path.
6) The html displays a table of movie names with ratings, which can be sorted.
7) Automatically resolves file names like "Fukrey - DVDRip - XviD - 1CDRip - [DDR].avi"

Use it and let me know any if any additional info that will be further useful.

And then after writing this long tiring post, I decided to Google for similar software. I was happy to note that there are many people who would like such a tool, but not many are present on the Internet.

Some other software are :

  • MDB(MovieDirBrowser) MDB(MovieDirBrowser)

Pros: Cross Platform, Available for download online
Cons: Pretty Big, Hindi movies not identified, Uses a static DB, No Sorting on Ratings(my main motto :D)
  • My Movie Lib Involves a lot of effort to organise things. Not Automated.

My First Blog

Hello readers!!

For a long time I have been using the Internet for almost everything I need. Through years of searching, I have come to the conclusion that searching the Internet is an art. There are billions of  results for each query, but a good search will have the result in the first ten entries. This is one of the reasons why I have decided to blog  my learning.

Apart from this, documenting what I learn will be helpful in aiding people who might be facing the same problem. Another important aspect of this attempt, is to have a Quality Check of the standards I follow and will enable me to determine whether the method which I have employed is among the best.

Hoping to have a great learning experience in the coming days.

Cheers!!
